This is a trend that just baffles me and that I hope won’t spread around the world. Chinese ban ye (“exposing grandfathers” in Mandarin) are pulling up their shirts to stay cool during the summertime heat.
Gentlemen of a variety of ages, social standing, and—unfortunately—stomach sizes, have fallen victim to the fashion faux pas to roll up their shirts – and as you can tell from the pictures below, that’s far from a nice sight!
You see, it turns out that in China (especially during the scalding hot summer months), it is perfectly acceptable for men to tie their shirts halfway up their chests and walk around public streets, trains, or restaurants with their entire tummies nakedly protruding.
There have been efforts to try and quell shirtlessness in general, with government-officiated “civilization” initiatives, and newspapers printing images of shirtless men in order to shame them into compliance, but these tactics just don’t seem to work.

Ha! I never new the Chinese slang for this practice. Thanks for sharing it.
Funny, but also tacky!
